Spokane Fitness Blog by Amy Hunt
They are household celebrities.
Every week, hundreds of thousands of eager viewers turn on their television sets to see what insanity Bob and Jillian are going to put their Biggest Loser clients through. Who will get voted off the show? Who will start the drama? Who’s gonna snap? Who’s going to push through to complete success?
We envy those seasonal tv stars and their 15 minutes of fame. If only… We say, “If only I had a trainer like Jillian, I could lose my weight!”
Admit it…don’t you secretly think sometimes that your trainers fall a little short because they don’t get you double digits weight loss every week? Do you envy those people as you sit in front of the tv each week eating your buttery popcorn and drinking soda pop and say, “Man, if my trainers were REAL trainers, they’d help me be a superstar just like Bob and Jillian!”
Well, here’s the story of the week. Are you ready for it?
The Biggest Loser gig is a FRAUD!!! Bob & Jillian are just NORMAL people, not superstar trainers.
Yes. I really just said that.
And I’m not just saying that because I want you to come work out with me and not put the pressure on.
I’m saying it cause it’s 110% TRUTH!
Here’s why…
When Season 1 of The Biggest Loser aired, we all caught the bug. Watching folks overcome ridiculous weight issues in a single season of tv shows piqued our curiosity.
Here’s a little history. Do you know how Bob and Jillian got to be trainers for the show?
An audition.
That’s right. They joined thousands of other would-be celebrity trainers in an audition for the position as The Biggest Loser’s fitness stars. Just like all those obese people auditioned for the chance to get tortured on camera. There was nothing magical about their abilities to transform folks into champions. They simply had the basic knowledge and personalities the tv show’s producers wanted for the job.
11 seasons later, they’ve become household names, tv superstars…the envy of the average American housewife across the country.
And like all smart business minds, they’ve monopolized on their fame. Bob can workout with you in your every own home with his DVD sets. His face is tied in to tv commercials for Quaker Oats. You can set sail in the Caribbean with Bob or Jillian for fitness cruises. Jillian’s business smarts extended clear in to the supplement world. I’ve seen her DVD’s everywhere. Get customized workouts from her for monthly fees. I’ve seen her face all over advertisements for the “amazing” Sketcher tennis shoes that are supposed to tone your butt and help your posture and complete clothing lines.
What you don’t know probably is that Physzique’s very own founder, Zach Hunt, made it in to a list of the top 100 Fitness Entrepreneurs. Right up there with Jillian Michaels, Tony Horton of P90X and Zuzanna and Freddy of bodyrock.tv.
Check it out here: Top 100 Fitness Entrepreneurs
Your very own trainers at Physzique are JUST as qualified as Bob Harper and Jillian Michaels to dish out the extreme fitness regimens you want and need. They have the same certifications and fitness backgrounds.
So why do you not get the same unbelievable results?
I’ll give you the top 3 reasons you don’t get the results that Biggest Loser gets.
- You don’t work out 6-8 hours a day. Every day.
Before you bother asking me why I can’t get you double digit weight loss every week, set aside an entire week and come to EVERY SINGLE WORKOUT session at Physzique.
Yes. I’m being serious.
We start at 6 a.m. just like Biggest Loser Ranch. You can get 5 hours in every morning and an additional 2-3 every evening.
Come on. Give it a try. Biggest Loser style training at its best.
- You aren’t eating 1200 calories or less a day on MY watch.
Face it.
You aren’t following a strict dietary regimen of foods I dish out for you. You aren’t living off protein shakes, chicken breasts and broccoli.
What did you sneak in to the diet last week? A piece of chocolate cake? A beer or five? Fried chicken and mashed potatoes? Garlic toast and spaghetti?
You get the idea.
I guarantee you that those 500 pound individuals who go through that intensity level end up with injuries. There’s no way a 350 pound person can do a Scorpion or run a marathon without some serious repercussions.
When you get an injury or tweak a joint, what do you do? I tell you to get off it, take it easy, modify the exercise. That’s assuming you even come back for several weeks while you’re “healing.”
If you were on The Biggest Loser, you wouldn’t get that luxury. Bob and Jillian would tell you to suck it up and keep moving. You would be forced on national television to shut up and put up. No exception. No “fat burning zone” b.s. or complaining about being pushed too hard.
And honestly they can do that because in the backgrounds, where you don’t see them, they’ve got a staff of on-call physical therapists, masseuse, cardiologists, chiropractors and other specialists to handle any potential injuries on the spot. Wouldn’t that be nice?
The Cold Hard Truth
The Biggest Loser has sensationalized weight loss to a point where realistic goals don’t feel like enough anymore. It’s sad because go do some research on all 11 Biggest Loser winners.
How many of them lost those hundreds of pounds and actually KEPT it off? Are any of those folks successfully maintaining their incredible weight loss?
I’ll warrant that most of them have struggled to keep the weight off.
Check out this story about our local biggest loser celebrity and how she struggles to keep the weight off. Suzy Hoover’s Story
When you don’t have a team of 24/7 instructors, dieticians, doctors and camera crews at your disposal, real life hits hard right between the eyes. They become average joes again, dealing with real life problems and temptations.
I tell my clients that realistically, they can lose about ½ a pound to 2 pounds a week.
To accomplish this, I suggest that their week will look something like this….
- 3 intense 45 minute resistance training workouts at Physzique (M-W-F or T-Th-Sa for best results)
- 2-3 cardio workouts 30 minutes or longer on your own (that is, power walking or running, jumping rope, stair stepper, elliptical, etc)
- Sticking to a 1200-1400 calorie diet (see previous blogs “Things We Know But Don’t Do” and “Food, Glorious Food!” for ideas on what to eat)
- Drinking at least 80 ounces of water daily
- Sleeping 6-8 hours each night
If you follow these guidelines, I *guarantee* you will succeed at steadily losing weight each week. I also guarantee that building these 5 habits will help you maintain steady weight loss until you successfully reach your goals. These same habits will help you KEEP that weight off for the rest of your life. So stop blaming your lack of weight loss on sensationalism. Get up off the couch and get in here for a workout!
Create your own Biggest Loser sensation amongst your friends by working hard without complaints, pushing past obstacles (be they injuries or just mental blocks) and be your own SUPERSTAR!!!
Let’s build some sweat equity into your health future!

Yup, all those reality shows in the TV right now are all fraud. Not one of them are telling the truth. Great job on the research Amy. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Amy, thanks for all the articles you’ve posted. I have read most of them and I find that your articles are very rich in information. May I ask what regimen to do when you just want to maintain your weight?
Laila, if you’re just looking to maintain your weight, I would just working out 3 times a week and eating a little more…say around 1500-1800 calories. It’s going to be different with each person, but if you are a fairly active person, then this should help you maintain the weight!
It is undeniable that everyone says “If only I had Bob or Jillian as my trainer I could actually lose weight.” Truthfully, I’ve probably…okay, I’ll be honest, I have uttered that phrase before while watching the show. But you are right, the truth is, there is nothing magical about Bob or Jillian (well maybe their stunning good-looks, great make-up, and glowing skin), they are ordinary trainers that caught a lucky break.
Great article, it hit on a lot of truths!
Hi Amy you are a great writer! All your articles are well researched and entertaining at the same time. Keep up the good work! Can’t wait to hear more from you!
Thanks, Leta! I love to hear that people enjoy the blogs!
Great work Amy!
There’s no such thing as reality tv.. Every reality tv out there is a fraud.. If you want to lose weight, it’s not just about the trainer you have, it’s about having self-discipline and self-control.
I remember that what makes a band camp, cheer camp, football camp, etc. successful because of the attention and concentration one puts in it. They have no distraction and all they think about is the work at hand. I think this is exactly the same with ‘the biggest loser’. Once you’re out of the game, all the distractions and temptations are knocking on your door once again. There’s nothing realistic about the biggest loser at all.
Whew! I never expected! But now that I think about it, yeah, I guess so! Every reality tv show is a fraud.. Just to make everything exciting.
I feel so cheated!! I mean, c’mon! I look at to them coz I believed that they are really great trainers, but never thought that they are just acting for the part!!
BOO YOU BIGGEST LOSER!! Amy, maybe should be the one in there? Lol
LOL! I don’t know if I could handle the drama.
This is really a great blog! Every word is so true!
hey zach and amy! maybe you guys could go and be the trainers for the biggest loser?
Or just start our own Biggest Loser TRUE reality show. Real life, real people, real results. I like that even better.
This is why I don’t watch reality shows anymore! They find a way to trick you one way or the other.. I mean, c’mon! They shouldn’t call it reality shows anymore, it would be better if they call it situational shows.. or unreality shows.. !
Haha! I totally agree, well written!
I heard about it before and I thought it wasn’t true.. Turns out it is.
They shouldn’t do that just to attract people to watch their show
I really don’t watch this show because I whatever they make the contestants do is too much and then I read this, now I really hate that show! Haha
Reality NO MORE!! All of it are frauds!
Well, I guess they figured it’s still a job so they just pretended to be very professional trainers! lol
I guess so. Don’t get me wrong…the trainers are probably very nice people and I have no doubt that they have fitness knowledge. Just the way it’s portrayed in the show is completely a fraud. Nothing realistic about it.
Biggest fraud indeed!
Personally, I think there’s nothing wrong with that, if its still a job they’ve been offered with, then there is nothing wrong with that. As long as they deliver, they may not be real personal trainers but if they are able to help out the contestants then why not.
